Mom and Pop’s First Showcase!
As promised, I said I would be showcasing small businesses that submit to our Community Board. Our first local business featured is Jessica Stewart Photography!
I met Jessica in passing over the Summer as I was walking my two littles around Olcott, NY on a slow weekday afternoon. We had just ridden the new Ferris Wheel, Hartz Folly! As we passed her studio (then under construction) my loud son shouted, “I NEED TO GO PEE!” She (easily) overheard and offered her facilities.
When she submitted to our Community Board to be showcased, I quickly reached out to partner with her. She offers branding sessions for local businesses in-studio or on location, and I’ve been very impressed with her work!
Having high-quality photos to add to our client’s websites is an important key in making their web presence look professional. But being able to capture their personality and brand in their photos is an art form. There’s no lack of personality in her photos! I am very excited to be partnering with Jessica!
Interview with Owner, Jessica
Where are you from?
I grew up in Wilson and currently reside in Barker.
Where is your business located?
At 5957 E Main St in Olcott, NY.
What do you specialize in?
I specialize in maternity and newborn photography. I love showcasing beautiful glowing moms in maternity sessions and their sweet newborns. I do offer senior portraits and wedding photography as well.
How long have you been involved in your field?
Officially since 2019
How did you come to start your own business?
I was working a corporate job until 2019, and up until that point, I was very unfulfilled in my work. I have two college degrees (one in music, which I teach on the side), and the other in digital media.
I wanted to utilize that degree and also spend more time at home with my two small children. These are definitely the years I did not want to miss in their lives.
So, after much consideration, and discussion with my husband, we thought it was the right time to take my business full-time and become self-employed. I haven’t looked back since!
What type of help or resources did you use to start your business?
Aside from my college courses in photography, I took a lot of online courses. I have an amazing business coach, and mentorship group.
I was also able to participate in NCCC’s Small Business Development Program this past year, which is a great resource for our area.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
I love all aspects of my job. I am so fortunate in what I do. I get to meet new people at every session, be creative, and serve them to the best of my ability.
What’s one thing you love about WNY?
Just one thing? The Buffalo Bills 😎
Do you have any other local businesses you love? (Related or unrelated to your field.)
There are so many amazing businesses in the area! Cadence Music (it’s in Clarence, but I teach there, shameless plug lol). Inner Beauty Skincare in Newfane is wonderful. Also, Valentine’s On The Lake Restaurant (my business neighbors to the north) are fantastic people with *amazing* food. New Life Reclaimed is also another great antique business, right in Olcott [located in Lakeview Village Shoppes]. Just Sayin’ Tees & Things created a custom hoodie for my business which I love. Let’s not forget Hiller’s Sweet Corn Farm. They are a great family-owned business, with great products. And of course, Mom and Pop Web Stuff!
Any advice for other people interested in starting a small business?
Don’t give up! It takes a lot of hard work, education, and dedication. There will be good days and bad but just keep a positive attitude, and have a business plan.
